Name: Kristine
Age: 30
Contact: krharbek on gmail, Kristine#3949 on Discord
Other Characters: Also apped Daniel Jackson
Interests: I love having a variety of different plots, though it's the interpersonal CR stuff I'm most interested in. Whether that develops through action or long days at the library is less important. Different scenarios call for different relationship development. One thing I didn't mention is I love to solve mysteries and do investigations.

Disclaimer: I am in no way trying to roleplay the real historical figure Judas Iscariot, nor am I trying to make any sort of statement about him, or religion in general. I am playing this specific character in this specific version of the musical, as played by Jérôme Pradon, no more.

Disclaimer the second: I debated with myself at length whether or not I should actually apply for two characters at the same time. The reason I landed on yes is because I know I do best in games when I can throw my full attention at it, and actively write almost every day. If I have extended breaks or very slow development, my brain wanders off. However, the amount of roleplay possible with a single character is limited, especially if you want to avoid annoying everyone with being everywhere (and I am pretty anxious about annoying people). In other games, I've usually played 3-4 characters at any given time. I initially planned to merely pick up a native character soon, but I've been so into Judas, and knew if I didn't app him now I can't do so for another two months, so. Here he is.

CHARACTER

Name: Judas Iscariot
Canon/OC: Jesus Christ Superstar (2000)
Canon Point: Post-suicide
Journal: [personal profile] thirtysilver
Age: 32

Canon World

Okay, this is a strange alternate history situation. There are TVs, machine guns, casinos... but also flogging and crucifixion and priests being political leaders as part of a fascist government. There's modern technology, and a rising revolution against the Roman oppressors. It definitely has some cyberpunk aspects. Imagine the political and religious context of 30 AD, but with almost current-day technology and aesthetics. Also the disciples are rebels who do revolutionary grafitti, stage protests, and run away from or get into fights with the police.

History

Wiki.

Judas was born as only child to upper class parents, raised in Jericho, treated well and given a good education. As he grew up, he assisted his father in business matters. He never married and was generally uninterested in romance. His parents eventually disowned him when he became attached to the teachings of John the Baptist.

Meeting Jesus of Nazareth changed his life. Jesus was a peaceful revolutionary, and Judas believed in him and admired him greatly, and so at the age of 30, he became Jesus's right-hand man, and stayed with him for the next two years.

As he was experienced with finance, Judas was the treasurer of the apostles. When the group traveled around, receiving gifts and money, Judas was the one who kept the books, tracking how they redistributed to the poor - a challenging task, given the group's rather careless business methods.

As time went on, and they gained a following of thousands of people, Judas began worrying about the consequences of their behavior. He saw what was happening both within and outside of the group, and he knew it was unsustainable.

For one thing, Jesus stopped being able to control the masses in the same way he had - many wanted to violently overthrow their Roman oppressors and believed Jesus would lead them. Jesus as a figure was becoming more important than the things he taught, and they were losing their ideals.

For another, as they were getting more popular, Judas feared retribution from the Romans. If they kept going, they might endanger not just themselves, but the people who followed them.

He finally made the decision to turn Jesus in to the high priests, unable to see any other option. It's important to note he did not do this lightly, in fact he was deeply tortured by it even before he did it, and the priests talked him into it. He also only turned Jesus in to be arrested, he didn't know they would beat or execute him.

At the last supper, Jesus confronted Judas with his betrayal, and they fought over it. However, Jesus was willingly and intentionally letting it happen, which was partly what Judas was angry about - he thought Jesus was behaving recklessly. But before he was taken away, Jesus forgave Judas, who cried into Jesus's arms just before he was arrested. He loved Jesus more than anyone - was probably even in love with him, even if he never dealt with those feelings.

He was eventually driven to suicide by his guilt and despair, feeling used, and unable to cope with Jesus's fate. He threw away the payment he was given from the priests, and hanged himself.

Personality

Like all the apostles, Judas is an idealist. He's a radical nonviolent revolutionary, advocating equality, compassion, the redistribution of wealth, and freedom from the oppressive Roman rule. He devoted the past few years of his life almost entirely to politics and charity.

He's far-seeing and prudent, and a patient man. He loves and believes strongly, and has committed himself to the cause, but unlike the others, he doesn't let himself be blinded by the promise of salvation (whether earthly or spiritual). Knowing that one way or anything, things will end in bloodshed, he decided he had to do what was necessary, despite how much pain it caused him.

While it may not always seem like it during his final days, Judas is a caring and loyal friend who got along well with the rest of the apostles. However, he also wasn't afraid to call them out when he thought they were being foolish, or when they disagreed on some subject. He was also the only apostle who didn't join in throwing the guards out, and who showed disgust at the idea of a violent revolution.

His best sides are his devotion, idealism, charm and eloquence, abhorrence of violence, perceptiveness, individualism and intelligence. His worst sides are his sharp tongue, self-imposed isolation, jealousy, anger and spitefulness. He is by no means perfect, but he's motivated by his ideals, and holds himself and others to very high standards.

He's a cultured and charming man, the most well-educated of the apostles. However, when it comes to a more personal level, he feels inadequate and is unsure how to express himself. Despite having close relationships with the others, and Jesus in particular, he distanced himself from intimacy, shielding himself from what it would mean.

Most recently, he's undergone some pretty massive trauma and is in many ways a broken man. Watching the abuse and execution of his best friend, knowing he caused it, finally drove him to suicide. He's currently emotionally fragile, desperate, heartbroken and lost. It will take him some time to heal before he's a reasonably functional person again.

Arrival Inventory

I'm gonna base his dream on Superstar, since that is Judas basically being the opposite of his normal self in a role he's forced into, but you can occasionally see his true self showing.

Wearing: Leather boots, vinyl trousers, sparkly silk shirt, red vinyl jacket.
Other stuff: A giant wooden cross. A crown of thorns. Cameras and sound equipment.

'Human'ization

Judas is a normal real world human.

Fit

Part of why I think Judas would be interesting in this setting is related to why he's not interesting - or at least very, very difficult to roleplay - in other settings. He's one of the most infamous characters of all time. Most characters, even if they aren't familiar with his canon, are definitely familiar with the historical person he's based on. Which makes it impossible for him to actually form almost any personal relationships, or be at all trusted, unless I go and change his name or something.

In general, I just think he's a very sympathetic, compelling and complex character. I would love for him to find some redemption and respite. I also just love playing broken characters and slowly helping them recover.

He would have a very complex relationship with religion, for obvious reasons. Having him grapple with the concept of magic and a variety of fantasy races will be particularly interesting and weird. He's also going to have a LOT to say about politics. And also the fact there are demons.

Regarding the fact I am apping both Daniel and Judas at the same time: they are extremely different characters, at very different emotional points in their lives, who would also focus on different roles within the Inquisition, and react very differently to the world. They basically cover almost completely separate roleplay-ground for me.
